Health Care Reform: Opportunities and Challenges, a highly informative presentation was effectively delivered by James P. Carey, Vice President, Health Policy, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Nearly 50 attendees participated at the HBA Metro Executive Women’s Breakfast Series event held on October 8th, hosted by inVentiv Health in Somerset, NJ.
James Carey was able to take the complexity out of Health Care Reform and simplify into relevant topics. “There are many pieces of the puzzle that have to fit together to provide universal access for affordable health insurance,” explained Mr. Carey. He noted, “The Health Care Reform bill involves many stakeholders – government, physicians, hospitals, insurers, drug manufacturers, employers, and consumers. And there are still several balls in the air and issues that have to be worked out before the bill can pass.”
James Carey breaks down the complexity of the proposed Health Care Reform bill and engages the EWB audience.
Participants benefitted by enhancing their awareness of Health Care Reform options currently under consideration by the House, Senate, and Finance committees as well as their understanding of the potential impacts of Health Care Reform on individuals, businesses, industries, and the economy. Various perspectives were shared by executives from pharmaceutical companies and service providers within multiple sectors of the healthcare industry.
This event involved comprehensive, interactive audience participation through a Q&A session. Following is a summary of highlights of participants’ feedback regarding James Carey’s presentation:
Understand the Politics
- Learned about the nature of the ‘politics’ behind Health Care Reform recommendations and the decisions
- Learned how the recommendations and decisions potentially interfere with ‘doing what is right’
- Importance for employees of all companies to be exposed to this critical information about Health Care Reform
- Help to educate employers and employees
- Concern that many consumers do not place a strong enough priority on good health practices
- Lack of good health habits has contributed to increasing rates of obesity, diabetes, and other major health risks among both adults and children in the U.S.
- Changing consumer behavior is imperative
The HBA would like to thank James Carey for helping us to navigate through the complexity of Health Care Reform. The EWB audience generated a solid dialogue reflecting on the various stakeholders involved with Health Care Reform and our potential impacts as leaders, employers and consumers.

"Jim Carey's presentation, "Health Care Reform: Opportunities & Challenges“, provided clear insight into a complex and heavily confounded topic. The subject matter is so critical to us both professionally and personally that it is essential we educate ourselves around the issues. Jim’s engaging and interactive approach made this possible. HBA did a great job identifying the perfect speaker to navigate us through this challenging and timely material. This was my first experience with the Executive Women’s Breakfast (EWB) Series and I now realize what I have been missing; EWB should be a priority for all of us."
—Barbara Rullo, Vice President, Drug Safety, sanofi-aventis
“The EWB is a great forum to share ideas and gain perspective from other women on current trends in a small group setting. In the most recent session, James Carey was able to bring clarity to the impact of healthcare reform on us as leaders in our industry. A part of my role at inVentiv is to oversee our benefit plans. This morning’s discussion gave me valuable insight into healthcare reform issues from the employer, consumer and industry perspectives.”
—Tristen Herrstrom, Chief Resource Officer, inVentiv Health
“This HBA Executive Women's Breakfast forum has the making of all the critical elements and logistics that I find not only valuable but also doable to integrate into my schedule. Topics such as Health Care Policy are very important to all of us as American citizens and leaders in the pharmaceutical industry. Jim Carey provided tremendous education and insight to the challenges of Health Care access, cost and quality with a passion that is certainly contagious as reflected in the very open group discussions that followed. I look forward to EWB's future topics and the focused networking opportunities it provides.”
