The HBA Boston chapter mentoring program event at Infinity Pharmaceuticals was a celebration of the successes and achievements of the 120 women in this year’s mentoring program. During this eight month program mentees worked to enhance their career skills, increase their personal satisfaction and to set goals for future career development.

Lisa Wittenhagen, the committee chair, opened the event with welcoming remarks and acknowledgements to the Mentoring Committee. Infinity representatives Jeannette Kohlbrenner, vice president of human resources and Deborah Geraghty, PhD, director new product marketing welcomed the guests and spoke about Infinity’s unique culture.

The evening program started with the moderator Carol Nicholson who introduced the speakers: Nadia Altomare, president-elect of the HBA Boston Chapter and VP of commercial operations at Perkin-Elmer, Nancy Horwitz, executive coach and career consultant, and Amy Weickert, director of chapter membership committee and senior director of marketing at InfoMedics. The panelists reflected on their experiences as mentors and mentees during their careers. They emphasized the importance of mentoring and described how they were guided by trusted individuals during different stages of their career development.

After the panel discussion, Carol invited the attendees to gather in their mentoring groups for their last formal meeting and provided some closing activities to be completed by each individual and as a group. These exercises invited participants to list individual and group accomplishments, to reflect on personal growth and goals, and most importantly, to define the next steps for their continued career development. The groups confirmed their plan for staying in touch after the close of the 2010 mentoring program and the activity ended with a heartfelt wish for the future.

Planning is underway for the 2011 Boston chapter group mentoring program. Registration opens in late January. For more information about the mentoring program e-mail boston-mentoring@hbanet.org.
