3rd Women’s Healthcare Innovation and Leadership Showcase was a smashing success, thanks to Rutgers, J&J, AMWA, and other sponsors and partners

Generous sponsors, strategic partnerships, knowledgeable thoughtleaders, and a cadre of dedicated volunteer leaders from across the HBA NY/NJ region coalesced to help deliver a compelling 3rd Women’s Healthcare Innovation and Leadership Showcase on 14 June, on the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School campus, in Piscataway, NJ. More than 200 diverse women’s healthcare stakeholders participated in WHILS 2017, including a range of students, academic and healthcare providers; policy makers and public health administrators; patient advocates; and industry representatives.  
The WHILS 2017 program featured:
  • 32 faculty and 19 posters
  • 12 exhibitors, including American Lung Association, American Cancer Association, Cancer Care, NJ Department of Health, NJ Department of Labor, US Department of Labor, Well Spouse, and VNA Health Group
  • A 90-minute opening session with sponsor introductions and a panel presentation, “New Frontiers in Women’s Health”
  • Two 75-minute breakout sessions, each with three workshops to choose from
  • A one hour closing session featuring poster awards, a break-out session recap and recognitions
  • Pre-, post- and mid-event networking sessions amid educational posters and exhibits
In-kind founding sponsor Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, was represented by numerous professionals and students from schools and institutes across the university. SVP for research and economic development Christopher Molloy welcomed meeting attendees. “At this time,” he said, “when the future of healthcare in our nation is unknown, and women’s healthcare, in particular, is the subject of heated debates, it is more critical than ever that healthcare leaders come together to talk about the issues and how to impact change."
Highlighting how industry demographics have been changing for decades, Molloy recalled the birth of his daughter, a recent Rutgers graduate. “She was delivered by emergency c-section,” he said. “When it was done, I looked around the delivery room at the technicians, nurses and doctors, including the OBGYN and anesthesiologist, and realized that of the 12 or more people in the room, I was the only man.” He concluded with words from Margaret Thatcher, who was a research scientist before becoming prime minister of England, “If you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman.” 
Founding corporate sponsor Johnson & Johnson Innovation was represented by Susan Nicholson, MD, VP for safety surveillance and risk management for the consumer products division of J&J. “I’m really proud to be part of a company that invests in activities such as these that bring people together to advance our thinking - diversity of thought is critical to getting things done.”
Dr. Nicholson challenged attendees to be focused in the moment, and to let the WHILS program be a catalyst to cement the habit of a collaborative approach to problem-solving, “I encourage you to ask, ‘how can I work with other people here at this meeting, how can I work with people in different disciplines?’ - not just today, but moving forward, whenever you’re facing a new challenge or an opportunity for change.”
Following the event, a number of Rutgers leaders expressed their appreciation of the opportunity to spotlight women’s healthcare with such a diverse and high-level event, including Women’s Health Institute director, Dr. Gloria Bachmann, who stated that WHILS 2017 was “one of the best women’s healthcare meetings I have attended.”
