HBA Waltham hosted an event, sponsored by SiriusDecisions and athenahealth, on Tuesday, 21 May 2019: “High Impact Leadership: Leveraging Gender Based Traits.” The event was graciously held at athenahealth in their beautiful Watertown location.
The event was well attended and featured a presentation on research conducted with over 290 men and women on characteristics of leadership. Marisa Kopec, vice president, innovation and product management, SiriusDecisions, gave the presentation and moderated the panel discussion immediately after.
The study showed that there are significant differences between men and women’s ranking of the importance of eight key leadership characteristics. Takeaways included:
- Women may not value subject matter expertise as it relates to leadership characteristics – rather, rely on their education and experience to tout their leadership
- Women do, however, feel they must come with all the facts more often than men. “We come with all our homework done.”
- Women value collaboration more than men when it comes to leadership: businesses are ecosystems of human beings after all and it’s important to care about people, have respect for them, etc. in all settings.
The panel discussion featured Shikha Anand, chief medical officer for a new initiative, Liz Franks, executive director, marketing, athenahealth, Erin Hatzikostas, founder and CEO, b Authentic, Inc., Marienne Sanders, vice president, home therapies marketing, Fresenius Medical Care.
Key takeaways from the panel discussion and resulting audience participation:
- Women have to deal with self-esteem issues when it comes to leadership: we are naturally self-critical and self-sabotaging.
- “I need to stay where I’m good at…” Women are more authentic when we talk about ourselves, but we tend to sell ourselves short. We don’t strive ahead of us…but what we are able to do right now. Women need to overcome their self-doubt.
- “Women need to have a sponsor and a mentor. If you don’t have one, get one tomorrow.” You need a sponsor for those bigger jobs: they don’t get posted. A sponsor will advocate for you when opportunities arise.
